Gene Roddenberry wrote Star Trek during a time in our history where racism was everywhere but look at how far we've come. We have a Black man for President, women have ever increasing roles of leadership, and more people are being judged by who they are and not how they look. Yet we still hear about racism, hate crimes, intolerance for different religions, and worst of all wars an fighting.
If an Alien, an Asian, A Black woman, A Russian, a Scotsman, a Country Doctor, and a White Captain could cause such a cult following more than 40 years ago then why haven't we reached that level of working together? Granted 40 years isn't a long time but look at where we are just in the technology and medicine from then until now. A computer use to take up an entire room but now your cell phone is almost as good as a laptop. We use laser's for surgery and sound waves are used more than x-rays for examines.
Is it that we can't grow up faster than our advances? Maybe it's that we just have to have something to fight about. Maybe it's because some of us would rather flow with the crowd instead of making up our own minds on the right way and the wrong way to treat each other. Is it to much to ask even when where all taught "Treat people like you want to be treated"?
Looking back over the news of the last year I know I can't be the only one thinking the worlds gone mad. Murder for hire (Ladies if your husband and you just don't get along then try divorce and guys the reverse is true), people claiming "God told me to kill" (listen up God never said that so ignore the voices), people claiming they are Pro-Life (then murder a doctor), children being sold for sex (Mom's if this ever seems like a good idea seek help you have a screw loose and if killing your child seems alright please try the method you wish to kill them with on yourself first to make sure it works), and the sad part is the craziness doesn't end it just keeps going.
Didn't even get into the racial garbage being thrown about and it got worse after the election. I won't even bother to repeat some of it as I really don't wish to get sick on my keyboard. It's enough to say that the people saying it and posting it all sound like good candidates for next years Darwin Awards (believe me they really will earn it if that's the most intelligent things they have to say). It's not cute, funny, or any other term but disgusting so please collect your award before you pass this nonsense on to some poor child that will need years of counseling.
Then there is the idiocy of putting profit over environment and profit over safety. Now why in the world would you want to be rich an dead (along with everyone else on the planet) or damaged for life (poisoned, maimed, blinded) because I like life and my limbs intact. That goes if I'm an employee also (you can't pay me enough if I have to risk losing a limb or getting cancer).
What about fighting Wars in the name of religion? Dumbest move ever but somehow we get nutbags getting people behind this. God means love in every religion out there so how do these goobers do it. It doesn't matter which form of a Bible because none of them say "If so and so doesn't believe you must kill them", none say "Kill for me if you want into Heaven", and if God really stands for love then how can you use hate them an kill. Doesn't make since when you have to go against everything that God stands for does it.
Now I don't do drugs but I can see the appeal when this is the kind of stuff going on every day. Which reminds me and brings me to the War-On-Drugs. You have to be on drugs if you think this is a war we can win. For starters people have been smoking pot, hash, an opium, or doing things like hallucinogenic mushrooms for hundreds of years. The only chance of winning means killing off the plants but as long as people have gardens??? How about we just make it legal, regulate it, tax it, and use the money to fund research for making life better. I told a friend the other day that "I might not agree with using drugs but I'll buy pot for someone on chemo if it will help".
Life is the greatest gift we have but to many have no respect for it. There is nothing wrong with agreeing to disagree. We can sit at a table for peace without needing to look at each other through a gun sight. We can accept all of the things that make us different and maybe even learn to value those differences. Right now it doesn't seem the norm because we kill for land, we kill for God, we kill, we kill, and we kill some more but whats the point?
In time I think this kind of craziness will end and we will learn to work together. Will find ways to clean the air, the water, to end famine, disease, and save our endangered species. Will improve our environment before we make the planet unlivable. We will have to because the option is to make the Human Race the next Endangered Species. If that happens it will be to late to make a recovery and no-one will be left to care.
In theory I would love to see peace.
Realistically I will be long dead before it ever happens.
I'm still quite young, I will dream it for as long as I live, but to quote Beth Hart in her song "If God Only Knew" talking about a man she loves, she sings things
Say goodbye to dreaming
It's only water in my hands
Ah well let me better ya one more then
ENJOY!!! *smiles* I love her. She and Tori Amos are my top two female singers ever.
Tis how I found her. Was in Best Buy walked by, saw her album and said eh will give it a go. Surely enough I was HOOKED in a heartbeat. But yeah she is rather obscure in the US ok well everywhere except for Holland as she travels there a lot, but she is developing a small following in the US.
She was on Star Search and won it ages ago, prior to hitting it big. But hey check out all of her albums. *grins*

I do avoid the radio, takes too long to get to songs through commercials and eh just no use for it. LOL
But that's only in some parts of the world, not all. I like to say there will be a time of peace for all, but I just can't see it happening....
Aww, Tony I wish we would have peace. You think after all the wars and killings throught time in this world, the human race learn by now, but we haven't, and that I find tragic....
On this issue, I really want to be proven wrong, I really do....
It might end being both......
Wouldn't be nice if it was voluntary on all parts....
Agreed! Children are not born hating, this is taught and learned.
If that can be gotten away from, then kids really do have a chance on making this a better world than the mess we adults have made.
I must disagree.
If children are not born with the capacity, and thus the ability, to hate without any need for instruction, then how did their parents/teachers learn to hate since they were themselves a child at one point? From their teachers, from where did the learn it? Since there is not an infinite set of teachers to go back through we can only conclude that hate was self-taught, with no external source needed.
If it was self-taught originally then it is just as self-teachable now.
Hate, or more accurately the ability to hate, is just a part of who we are.
There have been only twenty-two days without battle on Earth since the end of world war two.
All of these occurred in September 1945.
Nobody fights with the munchies.
You have found the answer to world peace! Let everyone have a little pot and chill. The only problem we would have would be the food supply!
You have found the answer to world peace! Let everyone have a little pot and chill. The only problem we would have would be the food supply!
The ones smoking pot forget about fighting when they start looking for the chips :)
Well, why not? Parts of the world are already short of food and that's a situation not likely to improve without drastic intervention thanks to combined forces of climate change and population increases. Maybe if we all got a little more mellow we'd stop and think and solve some of our problems instead of arguing about who is to blame for them?
It's a thought!
That said, Tony, I used to think there would be world peace in my life time. Now into my fifties, I no longer believe it. I don't know if I took my eyes off the world for 30 years and it changed or if I simply was never paying attention, but I look at the world today and think back to my teens and early adulthood and almost feel like a stranger in a strange land. Society has gone crazy in so many ways.
I don't think this generation is going to make it better; I don't think my generation equipped them to work hard enough - I think (fear) we raised a generation who expects too much in exchange for much too little.
Just my thoughts.
My first reaction to this fine thought process is one of admiration that SOMEONE can bring some reason and promise to print. My second reaction to this article is complete amazement that anyone in journalism at ANY level would have such a poor command of the English language and grammar. Is everyone in such a hurry to rush to print that we no longer find time to at LEAST try using the spell checker and grammar check? The decline of the human race is more a case of frenzy to be the first to complete a task than to take the time to make an attempt at some semblance of quality.
Gene, it's sad that you can't see the forest for the trees. Your first sentence was quite appropriate. The rest of your comment was not. The author asks a broad philosophical question, but your reaction is to attack grammar? You can do better, I believe.
We have a Black man for President,
What race was Hussein's mother ?
It just seems to be perplexing how you choose your race. If Hussein's father had been Asian would he have become our first Asian President ?
Wow, Wild, not only does your comment fail to answer whether you believe there ever could be peace, it also puts on display one of the many barriers that block such a peace from occuring...the prejudices between those of different races.
Daniel
I beg your pardon.
You are an offensive little person.
There will be true peace when Jesus Christ returns and establishes it.
And I'm going to be having a good old time when santa brings me a new corvette.
And I will pray for you my friend.
I already have the corvette.
Well said. I should avoid being counterproductive when I know better.
Hmmmm...maybe you do want to burn down the house, because I know you didn't mean it as a joke, and figuratively speaking, maybe you have more than one "house" in mind.....Peace on Earth? Not likely when there isn't even peace between people that are supposed to be friends to begin with......very sad.
Cain and Abel at the beginning, Cain and Abel at the end....so sad
Star Trek was socialism! Star Trek was SOCIALISM! It was the antithesis of capitalism and all the totality of American morals.
Can't believe that you came up with such a lame allegory for peace.
Now Star Wars knows what the real world is about. Using superior force to dominate, conquer, vanquish, and totally destroy your enemies until you pity the poor bastards (but without the pity, sentimentalism is a panacea for the weak minded). Now that's America.
You're missing an option.
Never.
People may be able to intellectualize certain actions and modes of thought, yet emotional states, genetic chemical imbalances and social instability brought on by the reaction to any number of human-independent variables pretty much ensures humans will never experience any lasting "peace".
Without some entirely hypothetical massive change in what people are eliminating whatever qualities push people towards conflict "peace" will not happen. Intellectualizing such a change does not equal being able to make that change. If such a change did take place it is likely the "people" who experience the peace afterward would have little if any resemblance to homo sapiens.
Humans are only another part of nature, just one more animal that acts differently than the others, just like all of them are. We are bound to become extinct at some point, the means of which are just unknown to us. Hoping for that to change is not the same as actual change occurring.
It is a nice dream though. (so I am voting it up)
Just my thoughts. (and yep, they are kind of downers)
as long as humans have free will, there will never be peace. fighting and bickering is natural. just look at lion cubs. they play-fight all the time.
as for G-d not telling others to kill, the old testament talks of several battles where G-d led the Jews to defeat their enemies, mostly b/c they were idolators or did not practice monotheism.
peace is an illusion, a sickness. There should never be peace. The new world order is the only viable future for mankind, where every aspect of life will be controlled, governed, and dominated. The human race deserves nothing but the jackboot. All resistance is futile. All comply with the new world order or suffer a miserable death!
No No No, you have it all wrong...
We are the Borg, you will assimilate or die!
All joking aside, I do think that world peace (or at least parts of the world, you will most likely always have rogue countries) is attainable within 50-100 years.
I was being serious though....there is no sarcasm or satire in my comments :) I just wanted to provide the imagry that humanity's future will be under the glorious one world government.
The borg is just a science fiction image...the reality is much worse.
The idea that one world government is necessary for world peace is childish. The Hatfields and McCoys merely have to agree to to disagree, not to form one big happy family; likewise the Montagues and the Capulets must end their hostilities but it is not necessary for them both to merge into the House of Verona.
As odd as this sounds:
World Peace= Economic Cooperation
I think of world peace in economic terms because of some simple facts:
We are close friends with China (and somewhat with Saudi Arabia), whom commit many acts that we find detestable, but must not shout down because of our economic ties with them. If we were not so dependent on Chinese labor or Saudi oil, would we still be as close of friends with them?
An example of what I am talking about:

All in all, great article, a very good read.
P.S.,
Can we post research papers on N.V.? I have several papers that are 6-10 pages long on various aspects of the world.
Dear Tony,
Nice article, thank you for a brief movement of thinking peaceful thoughts, before the rest of the world crashed in...
Each of us have the capacity to find our own inner peace, something very unique and personal. It is taken away from us the more we try to help others find their own inner peace, because in many cases it is so different from our own. It is hard to understand the ying and yang of the world these days, just remember that that what makes you happy can make someone else sad, if all of us could focus on inner peace, we would not be in constant conflict as we try to influence and control others.
My next bong hit will be for you ;-)
Have one for me, too, please; I've been told it would do me good, but for many reasons, I must abstain.
We will not have peace until the world is filled with atheists and agnostics. Religious people will continue to have wars over "my God is better than your God".
